National Environmental/Social Safeguard Specialist

Sheladia Associates is seeking a professional full-time National Environmental/Social Safeguard Specialist to join our team on an on-going USAID funded Lagos Urban Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Activity (LUWASH) project in Nigeria.

The objective of this project is to support our Client, The Lagos Water Corporation (LWC), in the expansion and improvement of urban WASH service delivery and infrastructure through strengthened governance, increased accountability, and improved financial and technical capabilities of public water utilities and private sector providers. The specific duties for this role will include:

• Assisting the expat Safeguard Specialist and team in reviewing project documents including Safeguard documents.

• Contributing to incorporating best Safeguard practices during the reconstruction/rehabilitation design/review process.

• Monitoring and guiding the local staff and the contractors on Environmental and Social safeguard practices and requirements under the contract during the construction and operation period.

• Providing on-ground training and organizing meetings with the key stakeholders under the guidance of the team lead on issues related to Environmental and Safeguard compliances.

• Contributing to monthly reports on Environmental and Social Safeguard compliances.

• Any other task as directed by the CoP /management to meet the project requirements.

Required Qualifications:

• Must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science or a relevant field
• Minimum of 10 years of experience in Environmental and Social Safeguard related to the WASH projects including 3 years in Urban WASH projects.
• Familiar with local laws and USAID guidelines related to Environmental and Social Safeguard compliances.
• Prior experience on Donor funded projects such as USAID/UN/JICA is highly desired.
